2017 has been a year full of big changes. The world watched Donald Trump take his seat in the Oval Office, Starbucks launched their Instagram famous Unicorn Frappuccino, we watched a once in a lifetime solar eclipse and Wonder Woman seized the silver screen by storm.
For the Camels, 2017 meant flying into big changes as well. We welcomed new clients and new talented team members and said goodbye to our old headquarters in Brantford for a fresh start in Burlington. Without further ado, here are the Camel’s favourite moments from this past year!
Leanne: 2017 was a year of change for me. I became an empty-nester and I made some big, business-changing decisions. The largest decision was selling the office building that had been the Flying Camel headquarters since 2006, leaving Brantford after 20 years and re-locating to Burlington. It was time for change and the new location in Burlington is everything we wanted. We’re in a vibrant area in a beautifully appointed space, much closer to Toronto. We met our Toronto-based staff members halfway and are more strategically located for our clients and the airport. I’m still adjusting to commuting but so far so good. I’m also writing this the day after the sale of the building in Brantford finalized, so carrying two properties is officially done! Time to celebrate as we ring in the new year! We’re situated to BRING IT even more in 2018!
Kim: My favourite memory of 2017 (other than my new nephew Sammy joining the family) was attending two trade shows for the first time: GlobalShop and HD Expo, both in Las Vegas. I’ll never get tired of the energy and positivity that is generated when an industry comes together to share and learn.
Shirley: It’s July 19, 2017, and I am at the new office space waiting for service men to come and set up our telephone and internet connections. I brought a portable table with me and set up a little office space with the only chair available. After one appointment was finished, I took my first walk down to the lake which is only three blocks away. Luckily, I had my camera with me and took the first of many photos of the Burlington Pier, the Skyway Bridge and Lake Ontario. This was the first of what was to become my “Treks to the Bank” series of photographs! I am loving our new office space in Burlington and all of the wonderful women I work with. 2017 has been a year of big changes for sure!
Erin: Working in beautiful Montreal is definitely a perk for me when it comes to travelling for work. I love the historical architecture of the city and getting to practice my French is a real bonus! This year I made my way to ‘la belle province’ a number of times for various client events including the new Cosentino City Montreal Showroom Grand Opening, the World Design Summit with LIXIL and Cosentino, the launch of the Dekton Industrial Collection, Silestone’s Global Kitchen Study Montreal Presentation, and the Hamilton Beach Montreal Media Preview. Flying Camel and our fantastic clients have experienced many successes in the French market and being part of those wins is always an incredible feeling. As the saying goes – Ce n’est pas du travail si tu aimes ce que tu fais! (it’s not work if you love what you’re doing)! Here’s to many more work travel adventures in 2018!
Lily: What a 2017! New clients and busy, busy, busy! With our win of Hamilton Beach, I’ve been able to get back to my love of video shooting. In my past life, I did a lot of shooting for food videos and I did miss it. Now I’m back at it with our short and sweet recipe videos for Hamilton Beach. This time around I’m not only art directing, but I’m shopping for props and food styling. I was lucky to work with some great prop and food stylists in the past and now I get to bring some of that wisdom (as best as I can) to our Hamilton Beach videos!
Christine: 2017 has been a big year in my life. I joined the Camel team, moved to a new city, and met some amazing people. One of the highlights of the last six months was my very first client event. You really can’t beat hanging out on a rooftop in downtown Toronto in the middle of summer. The sunset was gorgeous for design:retail’s CitySCENE, and the view was even better. It didn’t hurt to call that work! I look forward to many more memorable moments, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the entire FC team in 2018.
Kristin: Call it the excitement of show season, but as we’re gearing up for KBIS 2018, I’m throwing it back to the 2017 show for my favourite moment of the year! This was my second year working at KBIS and I was MUCH more prepared for just how long the hours would be and constant level of high-intensity excitement! KBIS 2017 in Orlando was much, much bigger in comparison to the previous year! I still have so many memories that stand out in my mind – including amazing exhibitor activations, some solid quality time with my colleagues (including an after-hours swim that resulted in being chased out by security – thanks Kim for giving me a record!) and of course, all the celeb-spotting! From Howie Mandel to the Property Brothers to Mike Rowe, my Instagram quickly filled with some legit star power that has given me clout all year long. Can’t wait to do it again!
Olivia: Back in March, I had the opportunity to visit Montreal with Kristin to help our client LIXIL Canada with social media support during a Toronto Blue Jays event. It was my first time visiting Montreal, and despite a couple of hiccups (like accidently trying to board a plane with a Swiss Army knife) I had a fantastic time running around the city, learning how to share Instagram stories and eating the best eggs benny with Kristin before flying home!
Debbie: Since joining the Flying Camel team in April 2017, I’ve had a LOT of favourite moments. From moving to Burlington from the Brantford office to getting our client Hamilton Beach’s rice cooker featured nationally on all Post Media publications. These are all memories from 2017 are so precious to me. However, if I must pick one, I will have to say it’s planning and organizing Hamilton Beach’s media events held in Toronto and Montreal. It was simply incredible to see an idea on paper being brought to life and to work with my phenomenal Camel teammates on executing both events. We exceeded the client’s expectations by securing top tier media, bloggers and influencers to attend the events and feature a variety of Hamilton Beach products online, in print and broadcast. That being said, I can’t wait for 2018 and what the Camels can achieve together!
